One of my favorite fruits to grow at my family home in South Florida are pineapples. Every. Single. Time. I eat a pineapple, I put the top in the the ground and begin the process of growing a new pineapple.
Yes, it’s true. It typically takes 1 1/2-2 years before I get a pineapple from the top that I previously planted. However, now that I’ve eaten a pineapple that I’ve grown in my backyard, it’s really all I want.
I pick them when they are perfectly ripe and golden, which are really sweet and juicy. I love freezing them and making smoothies or grilling for a BBQ. But honestly once I cut a fresh pineapple from the yard, they really don’t last more than a few minutes in my house.
To cut, simply remove the top, bottom and sides. Cut around the core in the center or cut into horizontal slices, but do not eat the center core. Enjoy!
